Webinar: The Rise of Govcoins and the Future of Crypto
ONCE viewed with suspicion, digital currencies have been more widely accepted since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
This recognition has sparked not only various investment opportunities, but also innovations and technological developments, especially by governments around the world keen to capitalize on the potential of digital currency.
One is China, where its central bank, the People’s Bank of China, has just launched digital currency pilot projects and is working with the Bank of Thailand and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority on this initiative.
The global hype in cryptocurrency investments, meanwhile, has been curtailed by regulators, but with the pandemic – a number of Asian companies have embraced crypto innovation in hopes of emerging from the economic slump. . Investors, especially Gen Z, jumped on the bandwagon despite the risk and pushed Bitcoin’s value to a new high.
To help people better understand government-backed digital currencies and the future of cryptocurrencies, The Star will co-host a webinar titled “The Rise of Govcoins and What’s Next for Crypto” this Thursday, July 22. 2021 at 10 a.m.
The webinar is co-hosted with Asia News Network (ANN), an alliance of 23 national media outlets in 20 Asian countries, and The Investor, which is a technology media startup from the Korea Herald. The Korea Herald and The Star are both members of the ANN.
Speakers for the first “The Rise of Govcoins” session include John Kiff, former senior financial sector expert at the International Monetary Fund; Nelson Chow, director of financial technology at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority; and Andrew Sheng, one of Malaysia and Asia’s top economists, and Star columnist.
The second session “What’s Next for Cryptography” will feature Kevin Werbach, professor of legal studies and business ethics at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania; Stéphane De Baets, President of Elevated Returns Ltd, a US-based investment firm focused on Asia; Marcus Lim, Group CEO, Zipmex Co, a regional cryptocurrency platform; and Pindar Wong, blockchain specialist and chairman of VeriFi, a financial technology consultancy in Hong Kong. Speakers will discuss the decentralization of finance, the benefits and dangers of cryptocurrency, an ongoing upheaval to eliminate illegal financial transactions, and the development of AI and programmable smart money.
