The detrimental effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have been felt across industries in South Africa, and the oil and gas sector is no different. With vaccine deployment programs underway, many in the industry are hoping the sector will rebound quickly.
“After the positive news of the recent oil and gas exploration in South Africa, we know that there is significant potential for the industry in the region and we look forward to being a part of the country’s exciting growth plans in the future. “, begins Kyle Nash, Division Director of Southey Offshore Contracting (Southey Contracting).
Founded in 1939, Southey Contracting originally offered industrial painting and subcontracting services to the mining and heavy industries in South Africa. Since then, the company’s offshore division has been established, which now provides specialist maintenance, corrosion protection, inspection, access, NDT and personnel services to the oil and gas, the production of electricity, petrochemicals, mining, marine and energy in Africa.
Southey Contracting operates as a division of Southey Mauritius Ltd, a leading group of engineering companies and industrial service providers specializing in providing complete turnkey solutions to clients in the industrial, maritime, offshore and energy sectors.
“We are proud to have achieved our slogan ‘let us be your solution’ and to find innovative ways to meet customer demands regardless of lead time or location,” says Nash. “In keeping with our business philosophy, we register companies in our countries of operation, allowing our international clients to capitalize on our local content offering. “
Southey Contracting engages in local partnerships and ongoing training and development programs for local staff, and in so doing, contributes to the development of the communities in which it operates. “Our presence in Africa allows us to mobilize our multidisciplinary teams quickly and efficiently to meet the requirements of our clients,” continues Nash.
“In keeping with our business philosophy, we strategically place equipment in our operating regions, which allows us to provide rapid turnaround time for the contracts we secure across Africa.
“Our services are not limited to Africa, however, and we value the prospect of expanding our service offering by identifying potential markets and helping our clients grow, wherever they operate.”
In Africa, Southey Contracting’s expansion strategy can be divided into three areas: geographic, markets and service offerings. According to Nash, the Southey Mauritius Ltd group is considering geographic expansion into new regions in West Africa, the Middle East, Madagascar and South America.
“We are looking at markets and areas of work that have traditionally not been our focus, such as power generation and the renewable energy sector,” he tells us. “We are already expanding some of our service offerings to include manufacturing, cryogenic insulation and personnel supply outside of the marine crew sector alone.
“And in the area of technology, we have made several changes to our equipment to make sure we are ahead of the game including advanced NDT equipment, tracked units, using Layher scaffolding on all of them. our shore work, Amphiblast units for wet / dry blasting and the use of 3D scanning on fabrication jobs. We are also studying technology to reduce the “human factor” in risk areas, thus actively seeking safer working conditions for our staff, and researching chemicals to thin the sludge in order to improve our service offering on the sludge. tank cleaning work perimeters, but it is still in the R&D phase.
The driving force behind the expansion and development of Southey Contracting are its people. The company has a team of dynamic and motivated individuals from various industrial backgrounds, each of whom is part of a flat management structure that promotes individual empowerment and ownership of work.
“This is the nature of the beast and our goal within the company is to actively encourage and provide an environment in which our staff are allowed to develop, to experience different regional and operational environments through participation. to the site and the project, to develop their capacities and to perfect their skills. , thus retaining expertise within the group.
The location of staff is a key factor in improving the skills of local communities, enabling individuals to operate in the industry and develop their skills to a level where they can not only operate in their local market, but also reach international standards in their fields.

For the years to come, Southey Contracting is aiming for this expansion and growth in a sustainable manner. Growing its operations is paramount and environmental awareness is a key part of the company’s progressive outlook.
“We seek to achieve this sustainability by establishing local partnerships in new and existing operating regions, as well as by expanding our current contracts with our customers,” concludes Nash.
“Southey Contracting will continue to provide the high level of service and solutions that our clients expect from us, and we will also have two exciting technology partners who will deploy new technologies with our clients and potential clients, in order to improve the services they to receive.”
