Regulars fight to save Oakland The Alley’s beloved piano bar
When it comes to dive bars, the Alley in Oakland has never been short of charm. With its grand piano, decades-old business cards stuck to the dark wood walls and a loyal group of regulars who come from all over to sing songs from Cole Porter and Duke Ellington, the 87-year-old piano bar is one of –a sort of institution in the Bay Area.
But as owner Jackie Simpkins learned in 2020, Charm doesn’t pay the mortgage, especially when the bar has been closed since March. So after nine months, the Grand Avenue bar and those who love it turned to crowdfunding. A GoFundMe page titled “Save the Alley”, started on December 18, seeks to raise $ 75,000 to avoid a permanent closure.
